Driver Assessment & Rehabilitation

Driver evaluations are appropriate for anyone who has a medical condition that may affect their ability to drive. A driving assessment may be completed if you are unsure of your abilities to drive safely or if your license has been put under suspension by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

Medical Driver License Suspension

Physicians are required by law to report anyone over the age of 16 who they believe may be unfit to drive safely due to a change in their medical status to the MTO. The Ministry's medical review team then determines the steps necessary to be completed in order to have the license reinstated, when possible. The Ministry notifies individuals whose licenses are suspended by mail.

What to expect at your driving evaluation

Evaluations consist of three parts. The first portion of the assessment is completed in-clinic and includes vision screening (to ensure minimum requirements for driving are met), cognitive assessment (reaction time, thinking skills etc) and a physical assessment (movement, strength, feeling etc). The second part is the on-road assessment conducted in one of our Skill Builders vehicles. The third part is the feedback session which is a review of all the testing completed and the Occupational Therapist's interpretation of the results. The assessment takes approximately 2.5 - 3 hours.
