Dizziness Clinic

Dizziness and balance issues are not always associated with aging. While there are a number of potential causes of symptoms, a large percentage originates from the vestibular system or inner ear. Our Dizziness Clinic is managed by a vestibular specialist with advanced certifications in vestibular therapy. The vestibular system is comprised of two components that help control balance and eye movements. Changes to this complex system may be the result of an injury, illness or aging. The most common symptoms include:

  • Vertigo (spinning feelings)
  • Dizziness
  • Imbalance and spatial disorientation
  • Vision disturbance
  • Hearing changes
  • Cognitive and/or psychological changes

Other symptoms are possible and every person’s experience will be different in terms of symptoms and their severity.

Assessment and Treatment

The vestibular system is complex and it is very important to know what type of condition the patient has since treatment techniques may vary greatly. For this reason, our program provides an in-depth assessment with review of patient history and utilization of advanced equipment which provides an infrared video-analysis of eye movements. The assessment outcome will determine which non-invasive treatments will be prescribed. Results can range from immediate to progressive improvements depending on the cause of the condition.

One of the most common vestibular disorders is vertigo or BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). Patients with vertigo will experience spinning sensations frequently associated with nausea or vomiting. Usually triggered by movement of the head, these symptoms will have a sudden onset and can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The cause of BPPV is from calcium crystals in the inner ear which become dislodged from their usual position. Symptoms and episodes can come and go but getting the underlying cause resolved is the best course of treatment.
